Every year for the last 3 years as Spring gives way to Fall, Mets season merges into NY Rangers season, I have been able to keep the baseball side of my brain occupied with thoughts of Mets Fantasy Camp. This year more so then ever, in the past I have simply gone down to cover the week long camp as a reporter, this season I am headed down to actually participate as a player. Each year I have tried to find unique ways of counting down the days until camp and sharing them with Mets fans, So this year I will do the countdown by Jersey numbers, When possible I will post my 3 favorite Mets who have worn that number, some numbers are harder then others.
Ken Singleton was my favorite player because #29 was my first little league number.. While the Mets did make the playoffs with Rusty Staub the man the Mets acquired when they traded Ken Singleton, I often wondered what the Mets would have been like if they had kept Ken Singleton and Amos Otis, both went on to have some very good years, but with the Mets pitching and there bats I can't help but think the Mets would have been a contender throughout the 70's
Dave was one of those players that you didn not hear much about them in the minors but when they got called up out performed the highly touted players such as Shawn Abner, Gregg Jeffries to name a few, was a decent fielder at either of the corners and good average hitter, he had 2 things working against him, he was replacing Keith Hernandez or Hojo on the corners and didn't have enough power for a corner position, yet I always liked when Mags was in the lineup, and since he was a member of the 1986 team he makes the cut.
Sweet Music, Frankie V only pitched 2 and 1/2 seasons for the Mets yet he had a winning record which included a 20 win season in 1990. His "circle change" was among the most devastating pitches in baseball. He and john Franco formed a great hometown duo which made 1990 a very interesting year. Frank is a coach in the Mets system and as such has worked with a lot of the young arms who are the Mets Future. Here is our interview with Frank Viola.
